What is Berberine?

Berberine is a plant compound found in plants such as barberry and goldenseal. Researchers have studied it for metabolic outcomes, including body weight.

Promising Research Has Limits

Some studies report weight changes, but NCCIH notes inconsistent findings and a high risk of bias in many trials. Differences in formulations, doses, and participants make results difficult to generalize. Research on an ingredient does not prove that a finished supplement treats PCOS, diabetes, or another condition.

Safety Matters

Berberine can cause gastrointestinal effects and interact with medicines. It may be unsafe during pregnancy or breastfeeding and is unsafe for infants. If you take medication or are planning pregnancy, discuss berberine with your healthcare professional before use.
