How Does GABA Benefit Health?

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a chemical messenger involved in reducing nerve-cell activity in the brain. That natural role does not establish what happens when GABA is taken as a supplement.

What Have Human Studies Found?

A 2020 systematic review of 14 placebo-controlled human studies found limited support for stress benefits and very limited support for sleep benefits from oral GABA. Study methods, doses, and outcomes varied.

It is therefore too strong to describe GABA supplements as a proven treatment for anxiety or insomnia, or to promise better sleep for everyone. Findings about GABA alone also cannot establish the effectiveness of a finished blend.

Using Supplements Thoughtfully

Discuss persistent sleep or anxiety symptoms with a healthcare professional. Follow the directions for the specific product and review your medication and supplement routine with your clinician.
