Both partners belong in the conversation. If you’re trying to conceive together, sperm is part of the picture. When an infertility evaluation is needed, both partners should be assessed at the same time. [5]
Understand the report
What YO measures.
YO 3.0 reports five measurements of sperm concentration and movement. Here’s what each one means in plain language. [2]
- Sperm concentration
- The number of sperm per milliliter of semen, reported in millions/mL.
- Total motility
- The percentage of sperm that are moving, whether or not they move forward.
- Progressive motility
- The percentage of sperm moving forward.
- Motile sperm concentration
- The number of moving sperm per milliliter, reported in millions/mL.
- Progressive motile sperm concentration
- The number of forward-moving sperm per milliliter, reported in millions/mL.
Concentration is different from the total number of sperm in an entire ejaculate. The app also provides a video of your sample. [1]
Know what to expect
How testing works.

-
Check compatibility.
Review YO’s current requirements for your iPhone or Android phone before ordering. Allow at least 30 minutes for your first test and reviewing the results. [4]
-
Follow the app.
Use the current kit and app instructions to collect and prepare your sample, load the slide, and run the test at home. No sample needs to be mailed for this test. [6]
-
Keep your results.
Download your report and sample video to share with your clinician. Ask what the findings mean for your situation and whether further testing is appropriate. [3]
What you can learn
A closer look at concentration and movement.

Understand the limits
One part of a bigger picture.
YO does not provide a comprehensive fertility evaluation or predict whether you will conceive. [1]
- Its five reported measurements do not include sperm shape (morphology), semen volume or sperm DNA fragmentation. [1]
- A result within reference ranges does not guarantee fertility; a low result alone does not establish infertility. [7]
- Do not use YO to confirm the success of a vasectomy or make contraception decisions. [4]
Plan your next conversation
Know when to seek care.
Home testing should not delay a fertility evaluation. For couples having regular unprotected intercourse without known fertility concerns, ASRM recommends evaluation:
- After 12 months if the female partner is under 35.
- After 6 months if she is 35 or older.
Seek advice sooner if she is over 40, periods are irregular or absent, or either partner has a known fertility concern. [5]
You don’t have to figure everything out alone.

A few useful answers.
Is this the same as a laboratory semen analysis?
No. YO reports the five measurements listed above. A clinical evaluation may include additional semen measurements, medical history, examination and other testing as appropriate. Your clinician can help decide what you need. [7]
Should I repeat the test?
Semen measurements can vary between samples. Ask your clinician whether repeat testing or a laboratory semen analysis is appropriate. The three tests in the kit are not a prescribed testing schedule; follow the manufacturer’s instructions each time. [7]
Does the test work with my phone?
YO uses a free app on compatible iPhone and Android phones. Check YO’s current compatibility requirements before purchasing. [4]
