Why We Chose Not to Add Iron to WrenLife Multi+

Some multivitamins contain iron. Others do not. That difference is not a simple measure of which formula is more “complete.” Iron is essential, but it is also one of the nutrients whose requirements vary most substantially from person to person.

That is why we chose not to add iron automatically to WrenLife GLP-1 Support Multi+. The goal was to create a flexible daily multivitamin for a broad range of adults while allowing anyone who needs supplemental iron to address it separately and more precisely.

The important distinction: we did not leave out iron because iron is bad or unimportant. We left it out because one fixed iron dose is not appropriate for everyone.

Iron Is Essential—but Individual Needs Differ

Iron is needed to make hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen throughout the body. It also contributes to muscle metabolism, normal cellular function, growth, and the production of certain hormones.1

However, recommended daily intake changes considerably according to age, sex, and life stage:

Men ages 19–50 8 mg/day
Women ages 19–50 18 mg/day
Adults ages 51 and older 8 mg/day
Pregnancy 27 mg/day
Lactation, ages 19–50 9 mg/day

These figures are total daily intake targets for generally healthy people—not automatic supplement doses. Diet also matters. The National Institutes of Health notes that people who follow vegetarian diets have higher iron requirements because the nonheme iron in plant foods is not absorbed as readily as heme iron from animal foods.1

Menstrual blood loss, pregnancy, blood donation, gastrointestinal conditions, prior bariatric surgery, medications, and an individual’s existing iron stores can all affect the amount of iron they may need.

Why Multi+ Has No Added Iron

1. One iron dose cannot fit every adult

A multivitamin designed for broad daily use may be taken by men, menstruating women, postmenopausal women, and adults with very different diets and medical histories. Adding the same amount of iron for every one of those people would ignore meaningful differences in their needs.

By not including iron automatically, Multi+ can serve as a flexible nutritional foundation. People who have been advised to take iron can use a separate product at the dose and schedule recommended for them.

2. Iron is better individualized when supplementation is necessary

Low energy, hair shedding, weakness, and difficulty concentrating can occur for many reasons. Symptoms alone cannot diagnose iron deficiency. Healthcare professionals may consider medical history, diet, menstrual blood loss, and laboratory measures such as a complete blood count and ferritin when evaluating iron status.1

Separating iron from a daily multivitamin makes it easier to adjust the form, dose, and duration when a clinician determines that supplementation is appropriate. It also avoids treating iron as a nutrient that everyone should take “just in case.”

3. Supplemental iron can affect digestive comfort

Higher-dose iron supplements can cause nausea, constipation, abdominal discomfort, vomiting, or diarrhea in some people.2 Individual tolerance varies, and these effects do not mean that someone who needs iron should avoid it. They do support being thoughtful about adding iron routinely when there is no known need.

This consideration can be especially relevant for people using GLP-1–based medications, since nausea, constipation, early fullness, and other gastrointestinal symptoms may already affect food intake. However, Multi+ has not been shown to prevent or treat medication-related digestive symptoms, and using a GLP-1 medication does not automatically mean that someone needs—or should avoid—iron. 4. More iron is not automatically better

The adult tolerable upper intake level for iron is 45 mg per day from food, beverages, and supplements, although healthcare professionals may intentionally prescribe more for a diagnosed deficiency.1 People with hereditary hemochromatosis or another iron-overload disorder require individualized medical guidance before using supplements. A formula without added iron should not be used to self-manage these conditions.3

Who May Still Need Supplemental Iron?

A multivitamin without iron will not be the right stand-alone choice for everyone. People who may be more likely to need an iron assessment include those who:

  • are pregnant or planning pregnancy;
  • have heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding;
  • donate blood frequently;
  • follow a vegetarian or vegan diet;
  • have a history of low ferritin, iron deficiency, or iron-deficiency anemia; or
  • have a gastrointestinal condition, prior gastrointestinal surgery, or another issue that may affect iron absorption.

If any of these situations apply, ask a healthcare professional whether testing or separate iron supplementation is appropriate. Multi+ is not intended to prevent or treat iron deficiency or iron-deficiency anemia, and it is not formulated as a prenatal vitamin.

Does “No Added Iron” Mean Incomplete?

No. It means that iron has been intentionally separated from the base formula because individual requirements differ. A thoughtful multivitamin does not have to contain every possible nutrient for every possible person. It should clearly explain what it provides, what it does not provide, and when individualized support may be necessary.

A multivitamin without added iron is not universally better—it is more flexible. Iron is essential, but needs vary substantially based on age, life stage, diet, blood loss, health history, and laboratory findings. Leaving iron out of Multi+ allows people who need it to address it separately, while avoiding an automatic dose for those who may not.
